How to get pregnant fast: 10 evidence-based tips
Have sex every 2 to 3 days throughout your cycle, so sperm are waiting when you ovulate. Know your fertile window, take folic acid, keep a healthy weight, and stop smoking and alcohol, both of you. Most couples conceive within a year. See a doctor after 12 months of trying, or after 6 months if you're 35 or over.
Key facts
| Chance per month at 30 | About 20% |

Your chances each month
Even for young, healthy couples, pregnancy doesn't usually happen in the first month. That's normal. Fertility is highest in your 20s and falls faster after 35.
1. Find your fertile window
You can only get pregnant in the 5 days before ovulation and on the day itself. Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before your next period, not on day 14 of every cycle.
See your dates with the ovulation calculator, and read how to work out when you ovulate.
2. Have sex every 2 to 3 days
This covers the fertile window without needing perfect timing, and it's less stressful than scheduling. Daily sex in the fertile window is fine too. Saving sperm by abstaining for long periods doesn't help.
3. Use ovulation tests if your cycle varies
Ovulation strips detect the LH surge 24 to 36 hours before ovulation. Clear, stretchy "egg white" mucus is another sign.
4. Start folic acid today
Take 400 micrograms a day from now until 12 weeks of pregnancy. Some women need a higher prescribed dose (5 mg), including those with diabetes or a BMI of 30 or more.
5. Aim for a healthy weight
Being underweight or overweight can disrupt ovulation. Losing even 5 to 10% of body weight can restart regular cycles in women with a high BMI.
6. Stop smoking and alcohol, both of you
Smoking harms eggs and sperm. Alcohol lowers fertility and isn't safe in early pregnancy. Keep caffeine moderate.
7. Look after sperm
Sperm take about 3 months to develop. Men can help by stopping smoking, limiting alcohol, keeping a healthy weight, and avoiding saunas, hot tubs and laptops on the lap.
8. Check long-term conditions
PCOS, thyroid problems and diabetes are common in South Asian and Middle Eastern women and can affect fertility. A pre-pregnancy check with your doctor is worthwhile, including vitamin D and rubella immunity.
9. Skip the myths
Lying with your legs up, special positions, cough syrup and "fertility teas" have no good evidence. Some lubricants can slow sperm, so choose a sperm-friendly one if you need it.
10. Know when to get help
See a doctor after 12 months of regular unprotected sex, or 6 months if you're 35 or over. Go sooner if your periods are irregular or absent, or if either partner has a known fertility issue. Tests look at both partners; a semen analysis is simple and quick.
